Beyond the Field: Local athletes pursue college dreams (includes video story)

On Feb. 28, nearly 400 high school football players competed at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens during the Orange Bowl Florida High School Football Showcase, where 45 college coaches evaluated athletes seeking roster spots and scholarship opportunities at the Division II and Division III levels. The one-day event gave South Florida student athletes a chance to perform in front of recruiters and potentially earn opportunities at the next level.

Instead of playing a traditional game, athletes rotated through drills while coaches assessed talent, discipline and academic balance.

“That would mean the world to me,” said Adon Hollingsheed, a senior at Pembroke Pines Charter. “I really just look at this opportunity as to get my education and to see if I can make it to the next level.”

Since 2017, more than 400 student-athletes have been recruited through the showcase, totaling more than $9 million in financial aid.
