Former DEA agent Steve Murphy, a leader in the operation that captured Pablo Escobar, spoke last week at FIU’s School of International and Public Affairs.
Murphy shared insights into the operation, which included the capture, escape, and finally death of the most notorious Colombian narco-terrorists in history.
The event was designed to promote guidance to students enrolled in the school’s Intelligence Fellowship Program, which provides preparation for careers at the 18 agencies of the U.S. intelligence community.
Murphy, who was a consultant on the popular Netflix show “Narcos.,” said the show isn’t completely faithful to the real story.
“You need to really know fact from fiction,” said Hector Cadavid, director of the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy, which sponsored the event. “Things that are glamorized in the media are just for entertainment purposes.”
