You’ve probably noticed it. The moment you step outside in the light of day, the air hits you like a wave.
Heavy.
Humid.
Hot. Really hot.
It’s summertime. But has the heat always been this merciless?
Across the Southeast United States, record after record has been broken. In Florida, where high heat is no stranger, recently recorded temperatures tell a much more serious story.
This is more than a heatwave or a summer’s spike. Meteorologists have noted a far more alarming phenomenon has settled itself upon the U.S., and it’s bringing the heat to heights that haven’t been seen in over a century.
What most think is just a wave is really a dome. Scientists call it a “heat dome,” and it’s upon us now.
What is a “heat dome?”
A heat dome, otherwise known as a ridge by meteorologists, is an atmospheric phenomenon where warm air accumulates in the sky in the shape of a dome.
Where things start to get heated is that the ground naturally reflects heat into the atmosphere, but the dome above catches the heat and actively pushes it back down, resulting in vicious circulation of heat with no end in sight.
This dome effect essentially acts like a large lid on a pot, trapping everything under high heat and even heavier humidity.
The heat rises, gets pushed back down, then rises again. It’s an unending cycle of heat, and everything in between simply gets hotter.
What makes this current dome a “mega” heat dome is that it was the result of two heat domes colliding, forming the monstrous heat bubble slowly traversing the U.S. and leaving millions to suffer under relentless heat.
Inside the numbers
This mega heat dome has been tipping the temperature scales since its formation in mid-June, and the numbers are expected to continue staggering throughout the Southeast. Florida has been a primary target of these shattering records.
In 2025, Tampa hit 100˚F for the first time in its recorded history. This year, Tampa reached a high of 90˚F in March, its earliest 90-degree day on record.
There have also been reports spilling out about the rise in casualties that have resulted from the heatwaves caused by the mega heat dome.
New Jersey reported a devastating death toll of at least 29 people as of July 7. Many of these losses are in homes without proper air conditioning.

In total, the national death toll has reached 40, with officials warning that days and nights are about to get even warmer.
The mega heat dome’s impact is unprecedented, but not unpredictable. Such was relayed by New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, who warned of the deadly heat at a conference earlier this month.
“Extreme heat is the number one weather-related killer in America,” Sherrill said. “This is the hottest stretch we’ve seen in over 14 years.”
Inside the implications
Despite the mega heat dome’s stretch of heat and wrath, life goes on under the lid. The Fourth of July was the epicenter of celebration and devastation as people went outside to observe the holiday on what was the Southeast’s hottest weekend yet. Temperatures reached as high as 100˚F, which was worsened by the humidity that fills the air.
Bouch Tedla, a local South Florida resident who has lived through many Sunshine State summers, speaks to the heat’s intensity.
“It’s frickin’ hot,” Bouch said. “It’s disgustingly hot. [My advice is] stay away from Florida.”
In Florida, officials confirmed four deaths. All were children who had died after being left in overheated cars. This would later become part of a tragic pattern that claimed at least 10 young lives total this summer.
Nights have also been getting dangerous. As high temperatures steadily circulate between the ground and atmosphere, the heat doesn’t disappear at night. It persists. In homes without proper air conditioning, this has led to many having to fight for air in their own homes.
A look at the near future
Meteorologists note the mega heat dome slows shift from the southeast towards the west as the summer passes.
This shift will result in even more devastating consequences for the Midwest, including increased wildfires and high temperatures with no ocean nearby to cool you down.
Though the mega heat dome is making its way from the southeast, its effects will linger longer after it’s moved on. Dried soils, damaged infrastructure and diminished health will follow after the dome’s deadly heat.
This year’s mega heat dome is not the first to pass over us. With global temperatures on the rise, it will certainly not be the last.
Scientists say that climate change is not the cause of any heat dome. Rather, it is the driving force behind their growing intensity, year after year.
Though the heat has been a common headline, the phenomenon behind it remains largely unknown to many.
