Lawmakers slam Supreme Court ruling that could deport Venezuelan refugees (includes video story)

The Supreme Court upheld the executive branch’s broad authority over immigration policy, including decisions on humanitarian protections like temporary protected status, or TPS. The ruling could lead to the deportation of non-criminal Venezuelans who fled the Maduro regime.

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz criticized the decision, calling it “atrocious” and urging Congress to pass her Venezuela TPS Act to protect those affected.

“Venezuelan TPS holders fled Maduro regime and built lives in America,” said Shcultz. “They sought refuge here from his oppression and tyranny. This atrocious decision allows Trump to deport non-criminals back to this murderous dictator.”

Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar also expressed her disappointment and urged the Trump administration to grant Deferred Enforced Departure, or DED, for Venezuelans and beneficiaries of the CHNV (Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela) parole program.
