Tamiami Park street circuit remains crucial in Miami’s racing history (includes video story)

At first glance, Tamiami Park looks like the average recreational facility. But hidden in the details are signs of what was once a key motorsports venue built to make IndyCar the talk of the town.

Track developer Ralph Sanchez brought the idea to life as the street circuit hosted American open wheel racing events from 1985 to 1988. Former Homestead-Miami Speedway track president Al Garcia says that the proposal for the circuit added benefits on both sides.

“It’s a county-owned facility,” said Garcia. “But for one week a year, we turned it into a world class IndyCar venue.”

The Tamiami Park circuit helped foster the expansion of auto racing in Miami and helped along the Homestead-Miami Speedway, which currently hosts important races.
