Tariffs on imported vehicles take effect, Trump claims ‘Liberation Day’ amid experts’ backlash (includes video story)

President Donald Trump has dubbed April 2 as “Liberation Day,” staying strong in his stance on implementing tariffs in the United States.

Speaking at the White House’s Rose Garden yesterday, Trump addressed the crowd with more information on future levies.

“April 2, 2025 will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn, the day America’s destiny was reclaimed and the day that we began to make America wealthy again,” said the president despite receiving heavy backlash from economic experts.

Convincing the American people that the tariffs are beneficial has been a main goal for the Trump administration, who has claimed implementing them will bring more money to their pockets.

“Reciprocal tariff’s on countries throughout the world, reciprocal,” said Trump. “That means they do it to us, and we do it to them.”

Other elected officials continue to work hard to stop the tariffs from going into effect, beliving their impact will do more harm than good.

“At the end of the day, what we will see are costs go up for everyday consumers, energy costs, smartphones, cars,” said Rep. Gabe Amo of Rhode Island. “We will experience this, and largely on the backs of working class people who are just trying to get by.”

The tariffs on foreign vehicles follow duties placed on steel and aluminum imports last month.

With numerous countries voicing plans to counter the tariffs, all eyes are on how they’ll affect the American economy and public.
