The Scene: Heroes, Hollywood and Headlines

From Marvel’s biggest trailer yet to Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster, Hollywood is delivering plenty of surprises this week on “The Scene.”

Marvel unleashes the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer

The wait is finally over for Marvel fans.

Marvel Studios released the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, offering the first look at Robert Downey Jr.’s transformation into Doctor Doom. The trailer teases a showdown with characters from the New Avengers, the Old Avengers, The Fantastic Four and The X-Men as they prepare to face a threat unlike anything they’ve encountered before. The highly anticipated film arrives in theaters Dec. 18.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey sails to the top

Christopher Nolan has another blockbuster on his hands.

The Odyssey debuted with an estimated $264 million worldwide, marking the biggest global opening of Nolan’s career and the best live-action domestic debut of 2026. The epic, filmed entirely with 70mm IMAX cameras, stars Matt Damon, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Himesh Patel and John Leguizamo.

The Emmys are shaking up the telecast

The Television Academy is making major changes ahead of this year’s Emmy Awards.

Only 19 awards will be presented during the live broadcast as several supporting acting, writing and directing categories move off the main telecast. Academy leaders say the change will create a more engaging show, while unions including SAG-AFTRA argue it diminishes the recognition of industry professionals.

Netflix expands its use of AI

Artificial intelligence is becoming a bigger part of filmmaking.

Netflix revealed that roughly 300 titles released this year used generative AI during production. The company says the technology has been used to enhance crowd scenes, battle sequences and post-production work, while emphasizing that AI is intended to support—not replace—creative professionals.

Apple Music subscribers will pay more

Streaming your favorite songs is about to cost a little extra.

Apple has increased the price of Apple Music subscriptions for the first time since 2022, citing higher music licensing costs. Individual and student plans are each increasing by one dollar per month, while family plans will cost three dollars more.

Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger hits another hurdle

One of Hollywood’s biggest business deals is facing another delay.

A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order preventing Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery from closing their proposed merger this month after attorneys general from 12 states challenged the deal under antitrust law. A hearing is scheduled for Aug. 3 to determine whether the merger should remain on hold as the legal battle continues.
