Though South Florida has scores, if not hundreds, of pizza places, local pizza restaurant owners, employees and customers say the best spots are in Miami Lakes.
According to the city’s website, Miami Lakes, one of the county’s youngest municipalities, has a total of 1,700 businesses, many of them restaurants.
Giuseppe Maurici, the owner of Domenico’s Italian Restaurant, said his pizzas are made with fresh ingredients that keep bringing customers back for more. Below are examples of the city’s best.

Ever tried pizza that comes from a coal fired oven? At this spot all the pizzas are placed into this type of oven. Founder Anthony Bruno, who was brought up in a traditional Italian family, opened this dining spot in the year 2002 according to the restaurant’s website. Eduardo Salazar, who is a waiter at the restaurant, said the best thing about their pizza is that they come with special toppings – like hot finger peppers – that can’t be found anywhere else. Other dishes meatballs, chicken wings, Italian tuna salad and more according to the restaurant’s menu. The prices for pizzas range from $6.99 to $23.79 not including the added $0.79 to $1.99 per topping.

Located in a plaza, Domenico’s serves pasta, soup, salad, pizza and more according to the restaurant’s menu. Giusepp Maurici, who owns the restaurant with his brother Antonino Maurici, said they make their pizzas from scratch and even have a homemade recipe for the tomato sauce. He said what makes their pizza different is that the sauce is light and sweet. Often, he added, pizza places use canned sauces that make the dish heavy and acidic. The prices range from $2.50 for a single slice of pizza to $26.95 for a specialty pizza.

Samantha Rodriguez, the manager of Pizza Scene, said the place has received great reviews over the years and everyone is a big fan of the crispiness and thinness of their pizzas. She said this location – near a movie theater – has been around for 13 years and specializes in New York-style pizza. According to the restaurant’s menu, there are other food options including salad, subs, calzones and more. The prices range from $2 for a single slice to $38.99 for three large topping pizzas.

Carlos Barahona, the restaurant’s head waiter, said what makes their pizza so special is the fact that one of their cheeses is made from scratch. He added that every pizza is made from scratch and placed in a wooden oven for optimal crispiness. Pizza is not the only thing that is served here. Other options include soup, salad, pasta and more according to the restaurant’s menu. The prices range from $15 for a kid’s pizza to $18 for a regular pizza.
Ken and Mike’s Pizza

Located south of the Palmetto Expressway is Ken and Mike’s Pizza, which offers an “affordable fine dining” experience according to its website. Amy Mitjans, a regular customer, said she has been coming here for 19 years. She loves the pizzas served here so much that this is the only place she gets her pizza from. What she loves most about this place is the sauce and crispiness of the pizza. This spot offers other food options including chicken wings, pasta, subs and more, according to the restaurant’s menu. The prices range from $7.95 for a small pizza to $24.95 for a jumbo pizza.
