Trump says the so-called “12-day war” between Israel and Iran is over, and he’s confident the U.S. airstrikes set back Iran’s nuclear program “for many years to come.” He even likened the impact to that of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
But not everyone agrees.
On Capitol Hill, reactions are split along party lines. Some lawmakers accuse Trump of twisting intel. Others say the strikes were successful and note that Iran is now open to peace talks.
Intelligence sources say the strikes only delayed Iran’s progress by a few months, not years, and didn’t destroy key nuclear infrastructure. Trump called those reports “preliminary” and claimed new intel shows the site was “obliterated.”
“Donald Trump has a long history of distorting and putting his own take on US intelligence assessments regardless of what it actually says,” said Rep. Jason Crow.
Trump says a meeting between the U.S. and Iran is happening next week, but insists a formal agreement isn’t needed.
