Without Tyreek Hill, it’s ‘next man up’ for Mike McDaniel’s Dolphins

With the Miami Dolphins’ top wide receiver out, the real question is, who will be the next man up?

The club, which finally managed to achieve its first win of the season, defeating the New York Jets, 27-21, on Monday night at Hard Rock Stadium, has quickly turned its attention to Sunday’s opponent, the 1-3 Carolina Panthers. But when the Dolphins 1-3 take the field in Charlotte, they will do so without Tyreek Hill.

In fact, despite Monday’s win, the atmosphere around Miami Gardens was hardly a cause for celebration. The Dolphins were met with yet another loss on offense, when a severe knee injury in the third quarter sidelined Hill, who has since undergone surgery.

“It’s a major knee procedure,” said Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel. “Obviously, his season is done.”

The club has kept close to Hill as he began the recovery process this week.

“As a team, we’re supporting our teammate,” McDaniel emphasized. Despite this heavy setback, doctors remain optimistic. “Doctors have said that there are great signs for his recovery, and he will be just fine moving forward.”

But what will become of the Dolphins offense the rest of this year? That’s on McDaniel, who spoke this week openly about the team’s current challenges. “I know the easy answer is next man up, but the fact is Tyreek has skills that nobody else on this team does.” Still, McDaniel reminded everyone the importance of a team being a collective effort. “It’s not just one individual,” he said, highlighting the vitality of overall team unity.

“It all depends on the availability of whoever we deem in house. So I feel very confident in the guys we have,” McDaniel said, expressing optimism in Miami’s existing roster as it aims for two wins in seven days.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa opened his interview this week by expressing gratitude and concern. He said he was “thanking God and praying for Tyreek Hill’s recovery.” Reflecting on the win over the Jets, Tagovailoa also said that the team is “enjoying [winning] right now. But we just have to find a way to continue to sack those wins.”

With Hill ruled out, Miami will need to rely on other players.

“Yes, [Darren Waller’s] played really good. Anytime you get the ball in your hands and you score twice, you know that shows us that you’re a valuable option for us or you could be,” Tagovailoa said, referring to Waller, a veteran tight end and his contribution to the victory.

Despite the seriousness of Hill’s injury, Tagovailoa revealed an optimistic moment following the incident. “I chatted with Tyreek after the incident, and he was really making jokes because that’s just his personality. That is just who he is.”

It’s this exact spirit that will be vital as Miami moves forward.

As the Dolphins prepare to take on the Panthers, the game promises to be competitive. Both teams have a key opportunity to gain momentum and turn their season around. And when the two teams take the field, it will be a battle of former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterbacks, Tagovailoa and Bryce Young.

Miami’s goal will be to keep their newfound confidence while adapting their offense without their best receiver. The Panthers see this game as an opportunity to equalize the rankings and establish themselves as a rising team.

“Urgency, the time is now,” Panthers coach Dave Canales said. “We trust these guys to execute.”
