On Nov. 19, United HomeCare and Independent Living Meals partnered with YMCA in Allapattah to host a special Thanksgiving food distribution aimed at supporting older adults and families facing food insecurity. With the holiday approaching, the organizations handed out shelf-stable meal boxes and turkeys at the Village of Allapattah YMCA Family Center to help residents enjoy a more secure and stress-free Thanksgiving week.
Dozens of recipients lined up, many sharing that rising grocery prices and limited incomes make the holiday season especially challenging. Volunteers helped fill carts and bags, greeted residents and offered small moments of connection.
“I feel like these events are fantastic,” said Lucia Maria Encarnación, a recipient at the event. “They help out a lot of people, especially in a time when we need it most.”
Program organizers said the goal of the event was not only to provide food, but to ensure that vulnerable residents feel seen, supported and informed about the services available to them. Volunteers echoed this sentiment, saying that giving back before the holiday strengthens the sense of community and reminds people that kindness is still present.
“I think these events help the community—people who are in need and people who don’t know all the resources we have available,” said Patricia Rodriguez, a volunteer at the event.
Recipients expressed gratitude for the assistance, noting that the meals help them maintain independence and enjoy a holiday meal they might not have been able to afford otherwise.
