United States passes one million COVID-19 deaths (includes video story)

The White House on Thursday marked the approaching grim milestone of 1 million U.S. COVID-19 deaths, as it continues fighting the war on this virus.

New data from the Centers for Disease Control show COVID-19 cases caused by an omicron offshoot have nearly doubled over the past 2 weeks – causing more than 40% of new infections in the U.S. last week.

“We’re quite concerned, even about the summer, particularly in the areas of the country where vaccination rates are not so high. People are not so much up to date,” said Dr. Robert Califf, a Food and Drug Administration commissioner.
