Measles outbreak spreads nationwide, case found at Miami high school (includes video story)

A deadly measles outbreak is spreading across three states, with 258 confirmed cases. Texas has reported 223 , New Mexico has 33, and Oklahoma has two. Health officials are closely monitoring the situation.

State health departments and medical experts urge people to get vaccinated. Measles is highly contagious and can cause severe complications. Unvaccinated individuals, especially children, are at the highest risk.

“The vaccine is one of the safest, most effective vaccines we have,” said Dr. Peter Hotez, codirector of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development.

Texas has activated emergency response teams. New Mexico is offering free vaccination clinics. Oklahoma is focusing on early detection and prevention. Officials encourage residents to check their vaccination records.

“It’s 90% protection in one dose, 97% protection in two doses,” said Hotez. “Oftentimes, it will give you lifelong immunity. Sometimes there’ll be some slight waning.”

The CDC has issued a nationwide alert. Experts warn that declining immunization rates are fueling the outbreak and emphasize that widespread vaccination is the best way to stop the spread and protect communities.
