Team USA is headed to the championship game of the World Baseball Classic after defeating the Dominican Republic 2-1 Sunday night at LoanDepot Park.
The Dominican Republic took the early lead in the second inning when Junior Caminero launched a 401-foot home run to left-center field. But the United States answered in the fourth, as Gunnar Henderson tied the game with a solo shot before Roman Anthony followed with another home run to give the Americans a 2-1 lead.
That score held through the final innings, sending the U.S. to the World Baseball Classic finals.
Team USA manager Mark DeRosa said the matchup showed just how competitive the tournament has become.
“There was just so much talent on the field between both sides,” DeRosa said. “You knew it was going to come down to one swing of the bat.”
The United States will now face the winner of Italy and Venezuela in the championship game Tuesday night.
