Fans packed the Doral Yard on Tuesday to watch Colombia defeat Venezuela in a World Cup qualifier.
Venezuela struck first in the Estadio Monumental de Maturín. This raised hopes the team would secure its first-ever World Cup appearance. But Colombia, which has already qualified, stormed back in the second half, led by Luis Suarez, who scored four goals, including a hat trick. The final score was: Colombia: 6, Venezuela: 3.
“Venezuela had a very good chance, they played insanely well,” said Denis Rey, a fan of the Colombian soccer team. “Colombia in the end was better.”
Colombia’s dominant performance dashed Venezuela’s hopes of reaching the tournament, while supporters from both nations created a charged atmosphere that reflected more than just sport — but national pride.
The World Cup will be played next year in Canada, Mexico and the United States, including Miami. However, it is unclear whether Colombia will play here.
