Venezuelan leaders, students and community members gathered this past Friday in Sunrise to discuss the urgent need to restore Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and address the challenges facing Venezuelans in the United States.
The meeting highlighted the struggles of those seeking stability and legal protections while fleeing the ongoing crisis under Nicolás Maduro’s regime. Participants emphasized the importance of securing legal pathways for Venezuelans and the role of advocacy in ensuring their voices are heard.
During the discussions, Democratic U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the Venezuelan community. She underscored the need for the administration to reinstate TPS protections, citing Maduro’s failure to comply with the expedited deportation process for Venezuelans. The Congresswoman also addressed the impact of U.S. sanctions on the Venezuelan government, emphasizing their role in pressuring the regime to restore democratic processes.
“We urge the administration to reinstate TPS and provide stability for thousands of Venezuelans who have fled the crisis,” said Leonardo Trechi, CEO of a American/Venezuelan televsion provider. “The community cannot wait any longer.”
As the meeting concluded, participants reiterated their commitment to advocating for Venezuelans in need of protection. They called for stronger political action, continued community engagement and collaboration with lawmakers to ensure TPS remains a priority.
