The Virus Finals brought Olympic weightlifting’s biggest national stage to Ocean Center Convention Center in Daytona Beach this past weekend, drawing top athletes from across the country to compete under USA Weightlifting.
The meet served as one of the most important competitions of the year, sitting just ahead of the start of Olympic qualification and attracting multiple Team USA members to the platform. With national rankings, totals and season momentum on the line, every successful lift carried added weight.
“Goal going into it was just hit big numbers and kind of hold onto my ranking for Junior Worlds later in May, in Egypt,” said Carter Sing, Youth Pan American gold medalist in the 79kg category. “So just kind of hanging onto that spot that I had and what I hit in Youth PanAms.”
Sing finished finals with a 130kg snatch and 160kg clean and jerk, securing his standing as the top youth in his division with a 290kg total.
Florida continues to be one of the most active regions in the country for Olympic weightlifting, hosting frequent competitions and a growing network of clubs. While the sport remains less visible to the mainstream than many others, its influence is widespread, serving as a foundation for training across football, track, CrossFit and other strength-based disciplines.
From youth competitors stepping onto a national stage for the first time to seasoned lifters chasing podium finishes, the Virus Finals delivered a full spectrum of high-pressure moments.
As Olympic qualification approaches, advanced athletes now turn their focus to the next phase of the season, carrying forward new totals and elite team spots earned on one of the sport’s biggest platforms of the year.
