Washington, D.C. businesses step up security before election day (includes video story)

Local law enforcement and the Secret Service in Washington, D.C. are working together to ensure security during election night.

Precautionary measures have been taken outside the White House, the Capitol and Howard University – the setting of Kamala Harris’ watch party.

Businesses near these buildings have also begun to board up in preparation for any potential civil unrest or violence.

“The Metropolitan Police Department supports individuals peacefully exercising their First Amendment rights,” said D.C. Chief of Police Pamela Smith. “But I want to be very clear: We will not tolerate any violence of any kind. We will not tolerate any riots. Offenders will be arrested and will be held accountable.”

Smith has also pledged that polling areas on Tuesday will have extra security to avoid voter intimidation.
