Severe weather has caused widespread power outages across both coasts.
Just north of the Atlantic, heavy rains, strong winds and rapid snowmelt are exacerbated in part by an atmospheric river, a long band of water vapor that transports moisture from the tropics to northern areas.
In California, firefighters battle the Franklin Fire, a wildfire that has already burned through more than 4,000 acres. Evacuation orders and warnings for 20,000 Malibu residents have been issued.
John Christensen, the owner of Malibu Seafood, was at risk in the area. Luckily, the winds helped his store evade the wildfire.
“The wind died, so you know, that’s the driving force,” said Christensen. “So it moved slower so that allowed all these guys with the big trucks to get in.”
Weather conditions are expected to improve in California by Thursday, with possible rain on Friday, to help put out the fire.
