Each year, Mother’s Day prompts a rush of flowers, brunch reservations, and thoughtful cards. However, recent surveys suggest many mothers prefer experiences and quality time over traditional gifts.
According to a YouGov survey of 500 American mothers, 60% said they would like to spend Mother’s Day with their children, while another 31% preferred time with their own mothers or other family members. Additionally, about 20% of mothers said they would value having some time alone.
Caridad Sanchez, a mother of two and grandmother of four who lives in Tamiami, said spending time with her family means the most to her.
“I just want to be taken out to eat with my whole family,” Sanchez said. “It doesn’t have to be fancy, just being together and enjoying a meal makes the day special.”
Dining out continues to be a popular Mother’s Day tradition. A Yelp survey showed that nearly half (48%) of mothers prefer going out to eat for Mother’s Day, with brunch especially popular among Baby Boomers. In Miami, restaurants such as Zuma, the Biltmore Hotel, and Mandolin are typically booked for their atmosphere and special menus.

Despite this popularity, not all mothers prefer dining out. The YouGov survey found 32% would rather spend the day at home, and only 17% ranked spa treatments among their preferred activities.
When asked about gifts, 36% of mothers surveyed said they preferred experiences, such as being taken out for meals or drinks. Flowers were preferred by 31%, while handmade items (29%) and gift cards (28%) followed closely. Jewelry and spa treatments ranked lower than expected.

There remains a gap between what mothers say they want and what they typically receive. Although experiences and quality time are among the highest-ranked preferences, flowers and gift cards remain the most common gifts purchased.

Miami offers numerous local experiences that align with mothers’ stated preferences. The Deering Estate hosts special Mother’s Day picnics and cruises along Biscayne Bay, offering relaxed family time in a scenic, historic setting. The Berry Farm provides a country-style alternative, featuring live music, outdoor activities, food trucks, and sunflower fields, which are perfect for families looking to slow down and enjoy time together. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden regularly holds family-friendly Mother’s Day events, encouraging casual outdoor enjoyment in a lush, peaceful environment.

Beyond nature-based options, Miami’s cultural and dining scene also caters to mothers who prefer experiences over material gifts. The Adrienne Arsht Center and Westchester Cultural Arts Center offer live performances and concerts perfect for a day out. For brunch lovers, spots like Zucca, Blue Matisse, and Sereia Miami will host wonderful meals tailored for Mother’s Day. More active families can participate in events like the Mother’s Day Run near Key Biscayne.
