World Cup in Miami: Misinformation risk is high

Recently, Florida International University Professor and former President Mark Rosenberg, Professor Eduardo Gamarra, and Sophie Mueller, an intelligence specialist supporting security and risk analysis for FIFA, gathered for a webinar on the risks of disinformation during the World Cup, which is planned for multiple North American locations this summer

The conversation, which was moderated by groundbreaking broadcaster and FIU adjunct professor Lesley Visser, covered everything from the potential damage of lies on social media, law enforcement, and emergency management.

Keeping it under control will be daunting — at least partly because of the scores of people from around the world that will descend on South Florida, where seven games will be played between June 15 and July 18.

“People begin to lose their ability to be objective,” said Rosenberg.
