As summer approaches, more families return to the pools and beaches, bringing attention back to water safety in a state with one of the highest drowning rates.
At the YMCA, swimming lessons focus on building confidence in the water. Teaching people how to float and developing basic survival skills.
Cost and transportation can still be a challenge for some families, but local programs are working to make lessons more available for both children and adults.
With more people expected to spend time in the water this season, learning these skills can help prevent emergencies.
“At first they didn’t want to put their face in the water,” said Sara Tejeda, an instructor. “Now they are floating and kicking and more confident than they would have been on their own.”
Even in adulthood, it is never too late to start.
