YDSA hosts Queer Punk Show for union workers (includes video story)

The UPS Teamsters union has threatened to go on strike soon, due to what they believe are unfair wages and unsafe conditions. In Miami Springs, the Youth Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) chapter of FIU showed their solidarity through Queer Punk.

“Workers rights are queer rights are women’s rights, because bodily autonomy is always compromised under capitalism,” said YDSA FIU President Oscar Alvarez when starting the show. “It’s gonna take a radical, working-class queer movement like the one we’re building right f***ing here to take them down!”

The Queer Punk show last Saturday night, as part of the national DSA’s Strike Ready campaign, was to bolster funds and awareness with local artists performing punk. Some of the artists did hip-hop and trap beats, but the message and anguish are all the same.

The UPS contract expires on July 31 and if negotiations are not met by then, the strikes will start. In preparation, practice pickets occurred the following Wednesday in Hialeah.
