Iran launched an unprecedented direct attack on Israel from Iranian territory on Saturday, marking a significant intensification in the ongoing six-month conflict between Israel and Hamas. According to the Israeli Defense Forces, around 300 missiles and drones were fired, with officials stating that 99 percent of them were successfully intercepted.
President Joe Biden convened a meeting with G-7 world leaders in response to the escalation of violence in the Middle East.
John Kirby from the White House National Security Council highlighted the effectiveness of Israel’s defense systems. “This was an incredible success, really proving Israel’s military superiority and just as critically, their diplomatic superiority that they have friends in the region,” Kirby said.
Meanwhile, President Biden reassured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Nothing of “value” was damaged, and only a single injury was reported. However, Biden also clarified that the U.S. would not engage in offensive operations against Iran, a stance that has been critically received by some, including Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio.
Rubio argued that it could potentially embolden Iran and other groups hostile to Israel. In the context of the ongoing regional tensions, Israel’s war cabinet minister has vowed that the country will retaliate against Iran “in a way and time that suits us.” This statement underscores the ongoing severe security concerns in the region.
As the situation develops, leaders from both parties in the U.S. Senate are advocating for the quick passage of a bipartisan national security aid package, which notably includes funding support for Israel. This legislative move aims to bolster Israel’s defensive capabilities amidst the escalating threats.
