Today, shoppers are witnessing a surge in holiday spending attributed to a rise in bird flu cases.
According to the CDC, experts have identified approximately 82 million birds affected by this disease since its outbreak in 2022. The outbreak has caused the death of millions of birds contributing to an egg shortage, driving the prices up.
This year, Americans are projected to allocate an average of $180 towards Easter items, propelling national spending to a remarkable $22.4 billion. This places it as the third-highest per-person spending on record.
“We do see that over half of households with children are planning an Easter egg hunt at home this year,” said Katherine Cullen, National Retail Federation Vice President of Industry and Consumer Insights. “And that goes up to 60% if you have kids under 10.”
