For anyone aiming to pursue higher education, Michele Shepard of the Institute for College Access & Success suggests always looking at federal aid and scholarship programs first, “And then if you do need to, turn to loans. Most students likely will start with the federal student loan program and maximize the federal loan before you go outside of the program,” Shepard said.
