Florida county produces Super Bowl flip coin (includes video story)

The Super Bowl is the country’s most-watched sporting event, but the big game’s kickoff is decided by a coin toss that gets its start in Brevard County, FL.

Highland Mint has produced the official NFL Super Bowl flip-coin for 31 years.

This year’s batch was sent over last week to be used by the referee this Sunday in Las Vegas. Ten thousand coins are produced each year —100 are sent to the NFL and the rest are sold as Super Bowl memorabilia.

“Everybody takes pride in this — how can you not?” said Vincent Bohbot, Highland Mint Executive’s vice president. “Whether they’re football fans or not, everybody likes to say that ‘We’re part of the biggest game of the year.'”
