Former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett fatally drowned in Destin, Florida on Tuesday.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 2:12 p.m. and transported Mallett to a local hospital.

The 35-year-old, who played for the New England Patriots, Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens from 2011 to 2017, was not breathing when he was taken out of the water.

50 miles east of Destin, Panama City Beach has seen nine people die in the Gulf of Mexico this month.

“The safest place to be when you come to the beach is near a lifeguard,” said Daryl Paul, a Panama City Beach first responder.
