According to the preliminary investigation by The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez was involved in a domestic dispute at a JW Marriott Hotel in Tampa. Ramirez was there Sunday, attending a conference for the Florida Sheriffs Association.
Ramirez then reportedly left the hotel, drove on I-75, pulled over onto the side of the road and shot himself. He was rushed to Tampa General Hospital, where he underwent surgery for serious head injuries.
The FDLE and Florida Highway Patrol held a brief news conference Monday to confirm the details of the incident.
“This is a tragic day in Florida and the law enforcement community stands with Director Ramirez and his family,” said FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass.
Glass went on to explain that investigators are still gathering evidence and information to “help [them] piece together the events from last night.”
The Miami-Dade Police Department released a statement Monday: “The surgery has concluded, and Director Ramirez is in stable condition. We thank the community and the extended MDPD family for their prayers and support. Director Ramirez will begin his road to recovery surrounded by his family.”
