High-speed migrant chase in New Mexico leaves driver dead (includes video story)

Gunfire was exchanged in La Cruces, N.M. this past Sunday when a truck led cops on a high-speed chase and left the driver dead.

Two police units noticed the truck pulled into a Circle K with a flat tire and attempted to stop them, but the unidentified driver sped away from authorities.

Eventually, the truck stopped and border patrol notified deputies that there were people hiding beneath traffic barrels in an open trailer behind the truck. The driver then threatened to kill himself and shots were fired.

“At the time, it was our agencies that came together to affect essentially a rescue of those people in the trailer. There were 13,” said Doña Ana County Sheriff Kim Stewart.

The driver later died at a nearby hospital. Another woman was injured but was later released from the hospital that same day.
