High school teacher fights for the ocean (includes video story)

Marine biology teacher Nicolas Quintairos of Miami Palmetto Senior High School is making waves in the world of education and ocean conservation.

Quintairos’ passion for marine biology began when he was a young boy growing up in Miami.

After graduating from college, he decided to pursue a teaching job to share his passion with students. He also wanted to create an environmental media company to document and raise awareness of ocean solutions.

His organization, Reel Ocean, creates educational content and documentaries advocating for marine life in Florida. Quintairos says it’s rewarding to share his experiences with his students.

“What happens is, I’m able to…take my experiences from the field and bring them into the classroom,” said Quintairos. “[I] use them to kind of motivate my kids and show them what’s going on.”

Reel Ocean is currently partnering with companies, including Disney Conservation and Sea World, to create a documentary focused on diseases impacting Florida’s coral reefs.
