Florida gun violence awareness (includes audio story)

Florida Gun Violence Awareness Podcast (FGVA) is all about publicizing one of Florida’s biggest issues. Firearms have been around for as long as anyone can remember. But the new Florida House Bill (HB) 543 signed by Ron DeSantis allows Floridians to carry concealed weapons without a government-issued permit. The FGVA podcast talks to professionals, victims, and concerned citizens to raise awareness.

Episode 1: In this episode of Florida Gun Violence Awareness, we interview psychologist Ingrid Svenblad where we look at gun violence from a psychological standpoint. Svenblad has a background of working with adults and children and talks about the warning signs. Svenblad further gets into the warning signs that she has seen in her work experience mostly with children and from the standpoint of being a mother.

Episode 2:

Gun violence is one of the biggest topics and issues in the United States. Now, Florida is in the spotlight because of its new permit-less carry law that went into effect in July.

“I really think that DeSantis has passed this law as a political move,” said FIU student Alexandra Howard. “I honestly feel like it was just a leverage that he used for his political campaign because he is running for president.”

Sophia Bolivar is a senior at FIU, majoring in digital journalism with a focus on environmental issues and criminal justice. Her passion for writing and photography has driven her to pursue a career in journalism.

Melissa Bilder is majoring in digital broadcasting with an area of concentration in psychology. She wishes to continue her studies after to receive a master’s.

Jennifer Barban is a junior Digital Multimedia student at Florida International University. She was born and raised in Miami, FL. Jennifer is currently 21 years old. She obtained her Associates in Business Administration at Miami Dade College before transferring to FIU. She enjoys photography and videography in her free time and hopes to pursue a job in movie making.
