South Florida makes its debut in rugby with the Miami Sharks

Florida fans — can you make a little more room in your heart for the new men in town?

The sport is rugby, and the team is the Miami Sharks. Rugby is an intense and physical competition; the matches are 80 minutes split into two 40-minute halves. The international game is being played professionally in the 305 for the first time ever.

The Sharks are Miami’s team, as well as the city’s introduction to the sport. They’re new to Major League Rugby, but the league has only been around since 2018. Miami’s addition rounds out the MLR to an even 12 teams.

The Sharks made history on Sunday as they played in their season debut at the Auto Nation Sports Field in Fort Lauderdale. Miami hosted the Chicago Hounds, but was defeated 23 to 19 in a hard-fought match. The Sharks will now head on the road to take on the Seattle Seawolves next Saturday, March 9.
